GreenHomes America Awarded for Energy Program Results
GreenHomes America by EnTherm has received a 2010 Home Performance with Energy Star Century Club Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

This is the second consecutive year GreenHomes by EnTherm has received the award, which recognizes GreenHomes America as having improved the energy efficiency of a minimum of 100 homes in the past year through the "Home Performance with Energy Star" program. Home Performance with Energy Star offers homeowners a comprehensive, whole house approach to improving energy efficiency and comfort, while saving money on utility bills and helping to protect the environment.

With their participation, contractors receive specialized training and diagnostic tools to inspect homes to determine where improvements are needed. Rather than focusing on a single problem, such as an old heating or cooling system, not enough insulation in the attic, or leaky windows, they look at how improvements throughout a home can work together to give homeowners the best results.

"This is the second year in a row we’ve received this honor. We're proud to be one of only 40 contractors in the country to receive this award this year," says Frank LaSala, general manager of GreenHomes America by EnTherm. "Our employees are dedicated to making Central New York customers more energy efficient and saving them money on their utility bills. Home Performance with Energy Star, and the whole-home approach helps us meet and exceed their expectations every time," LaSala says.

BPI Seeks Comment on Revisions to Insulation Standards
The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) is accepting public comment on a revision to its Envelope Professional Standard relating to materials selection for dense-pack wall insulation applications. The revised standard references a materials specification standard and a test method standard that are also being released for public comment. Deadline for comments is June 16, 2010.

BPI sources say it's revising its requirements for dense-pack wall insulation materials used in existing homes. The updates will permit the use of a relatively new class of fiberglass and rock wool insulation materials, which meet the BPI performance requirements. They can be used for the dense-pack insulation of wall cavities in existing homes in addition to cellulose and spray foam.

"These changes enforce the need for materials neutrality in the development of standards. BPI is committed to developing and maintaining standards that meet the needs of a rapidly evolving home performance contracting industry," says David Hepinstall, BPI chairman. The new standards actions by BPI's Standards Technical Committee are major steps towards improving residential energy efficiency retrofit programs by providing contractors with a wider array of technology options.
