The Colorado Division of Southland Industries, Denver, CO, has received the Silver for the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building in the Design/Build (All Projects) Subcontractor Category at the 15th Annual ACE Awards. Southland Industries acted as the primary design-build mechanical subcontractor to Hensel Phelps Construction Company, the prime design-builder, on this $129 million fast-tracked project in Denver. Sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of Colorado, the ACE Award, Award for Construction Excellence, symbolizes the many facets of construction that make for a successful project, including dynamic design, quality, skill, strength, and performance. The Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building houses 52 city agencies and numerous public areas, so the design of the mechanical system to meet those varying comfort conditions became central to the overall design of the building. Further, the 12-story, 640,000 square foot, new building is connected, via a four-story atrium, to the existing renovated Annex One structure, which involved complex smoke and life safety design as well as building pressurization between the three areas. Southland Industries was selected in 2001 as Contracting Business’ 2001 Commercial Contractor of the Year.
