    Daikin Magnitude Chiller Now Available

    July 22, 2014
For the first time, Daikin Magnetic Bearing Chiller technology will be available for large commercial applications, resulting in big advantages that could save facilities up to $4 million over the life of the chiller.

For the first time, Daikin Magnetic Bearing Chiller technology will be available for large commercial applications, resulting in big advantages that sources say could save facilities up to $4 million over the life of the chiller. The technology, pioneered by Daikin Applied, a member of Daikin Industries, the world’s largest air conditioning manufacturer, is 40% more efficient than traditional chillers currently used for large applications.

    Here's a video on Magnitude:

The company is making the technology available up to 1500 ton capacity through an expansion of its popular Magnitude centrifugal chiller line. Engineers and contractors are already welcoming the technology by incorporating the large tonnage chillers into their design plans. They are expecting significant impacts to the overall efficiency and life cycle costs of these projects.

Magnitude’s oil-free, magnetic bearing compressor technology
has been proven to reduce energy and operating costs
while delivering the highest level of reliability,
    energy efficiency and quiet operation.

The Daikin Magnitude chiller appears in the pages of ContractingBusiness.com.

Hospitals, data centers, universities and other large facilities now have a new, better way to meet HVAC energy efficiency standards while reaping significant cost savings. In addition to potentially saving facilities up to $4 million over the life of the chiller, Daikin Applied’s 1500-ton Magnitude chiller is 40% more efficient than traditional chillers currently used for large applications, Daikin sources report, adding that with more than 3,000 installations globally, Magnitude’s oil-free, magnetic bearing compressor technology has been proven to reduce energy and operating costs while delivering the highest level of reliability, energy efficiency and quiet operation.

“The engineers at Stantec are so excited about the Daikin magnetic bearing chiller technology becoming available in the 1500 ton size that we’ve been holding off on four large projects [hospitality, healthcare, district cooling and commercial office building], so that we could implement the Magnitude chiller,” said Randy Pool, PE, LEED AP, managing principal at Stantec’s Winston-Salem, NC office. “We believe in the superior design of Magnitude chillers because they help us deliver on clients’ expectations for high energy efficiency, low sound ratings, and reduced maintenance and life cycle costs.”

Pool says the results of the magnetic bearing chiller technology have been significant enough that some Stantec clients are moving all of their projects under their holding companies to Magnitude chillers. The oil-free design is especially appealing to clients.

“Our clients want to remove the risk and cost of oil-based chillers from their projects, as they are more expensive to maintain. We’ve also found on several occasions that we can’t turn off the power to oil-based systems because it takes about an hour for the oil to heat up before the chiller can be brought back online,” said Pool.

With more than 3,000 installations globally, Magnitude’s oil-free, magnetic bearing compressor technology is proven to reduce energy and operating costs while delivering the highest level of reliability. The oil-free technology reduces maintenance costs because there are no conventional bearings or an oil management system. Sustainable efficiency and capacity is assured by the oil-free system design which maintains “as new” performance by eliminating the heat transfer loss when oil contaminates the refrigerant and builds up in the evaporator. Magnitude also meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification criteria by using a refrigerant, HFC-134a, with no ozone depletion potential or phase-out schedule.

According to Glenn Richardson, D.E., sales engineer at Total Mechanical Services, Inc., a full service mechanical contracting company based in Milwaukee, WI, the 1500 ton Magnitude chillers also open up new and larger applications for their customers. “This gives us more flexibility to match various loads at various conditions,” Richardson said. “With the 1500 ton chiller, we will be able to achieve a wider operating range with higher energy efficiency and a lower total cost of ownership than we could with two standard chillers  — all while using a smaller footprint.”

Richardson told ContractingBusiness.com that with the two compressors on a single chiller, one will operate up to about 60% of capacity, "and the effect you have from such a large chiller under one compressor, with the other shut off, is that you have this enormous heat exchanger that enhances efficiency, as compared to having two chillers, with two smaller heat exchangers under one compressor. For part-load situations, there are many days on which you don’t need two compressors. And they have the software that enables them to operate as one, when they’re run at the same RPM."

Also new to the market for mission critical applications is the exclusive Daikin Applied RideThrough™ feature, which enables the chiller to maintain compressor rotation in the event of momentary power loss. RideThrough makes it possible for the chiller to virtually eliminate the impact of short duration power failures by “catching” the spinning motor rotor and returning immediately to the original pre-power loss capacity. In addition, the Magnitude chiller includes dual compressors and VFDs for redundancy, allowing it to operate at 60 percent capacity on one compressor.

The chiller will be available in a breakdown configuration for retrofit or applications with tight access constraints. The Daikin Magnitude centrifugal chiller line is now available in capacities ranging from 100 to 1500 tons.
