Commercial refrigeration systems manufacturer Hill PHOENIX, and two major U.S. supermarket chains — Raley's and Giant Eagle — have received 2008-2009 GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership “Distinguished Partner Awards” from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The awards were presented during the Food Marketing Institute's Sustainability Summit in San Francisco in August.

Hill PHOENIX refrigeration technology includes ozone-safe refrigeration technologies for supermarkets and grocery supercenters. Its Second Nature^® refrigeration technology now includes traditional propylene glycol medium temperature systems and newly developed medium and low temperature systems that use natural refrigerants to chill perishable products in supermarkets.

“We look forward to continuing our work with the GreenChill Partnership on promoting green technologies, strategies, and practices to protect the ozone layer and significantly reduce greenhouse gases,” says Randy Walthers, Raley's energy manager.

West Sacramento, CA-based Raley's has pledged to, “go above and beyond regulatory requirements by measuring and tracking refrigerant emissions that affect climate change and the earth's ozone layer. In addition, they set reduction targets for these emissions, and participate in government/industry research initiatives to assess the performance of cutting edge, ‘green’ refrigeration technologies.”

Cleveland, OH-based Giant Eagle has received three GreenChill awards: • 2008 Best Partner Emissions Rate Award for achieving the lowest refrigerant leak rate

• 2008 Exceptional Goal Achievement Award, for exceeding GreenChill standards in reductions of refrigerant emissions

• 2008 Superior Goal Achievement Award for achieving GreenChill's target rate for overall emissions.
