At HVAC Comfortech 2011, 12 products were recognized as Product Showcase Award winners. Judges took into consideration the ease with which HVAC contractors can apply the technology, and the technical value of the product or service to the HVAC industry. We’ll feature these products each month in upcoming issues of Contracting Business.com. This month, we’re featuring Bacharach, the winner in the Instrumentation/Diagnostics category. For additional information on any of the products listed here, circle the appropriate number(s) on the reader service card at the back of this issue or visit www.contractingbusiness.com/freeinfo.html.

Bacharach Offers New Analyzer for Fast, Accurate Measurement
The Bacharach PCA3 is a tool for service technicians and boiler contractors who need to ensure safe operating conditions, determine combustion efficiency and perform emissions testing. This lightweight handheld combustion and emissions analyzer directly measures and displays flue gas oxygen (O2), carbon monoxide (CO), stack temperature, draft, differential pressure, combustion air temperature and optionally measures and displays nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The PCA®3 simultaneously calculates and displays Combustion Efficiency (EFF), Excess Air (EA), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), NOx and Oxygen reference values.

The PCA3 performs combustion calculations for 10 different fuels and uses up to six field-upgradable electrochemical sensors. It features a large, bright full-color graphic display.

The PCA3 combustion and emissions analyzer enables fast and accurate measurement for on-demand or semi-continuous sampling of light industrial, institutional, commercial and residential furnaces, boilers and appliances.

Energy Resource Products Introduces Industrial Line of Wireless Sensors
Energy Resource Products (ERP) introduced an industrial line of their Sentry wireless sensors. Branded as Sentry I, the sensors are enclosed in a robust; weatherproof NEMA (type 1, 2, 4, 4X, 12 and 13) rated housing and are UL listed to UL508-4x specifications.

There are 21 Sentry I sensors to compliment the 27 commercial Sentry sensors. The Sentry I sensors include the popular monitoring applications like temperature, humidity and presence of water, to more specialized applications like voltage, current, pressure and light. The data captured from the sensors is transmitted to a gateway, then to the Sentry online dashboard where its history is recorded. The dashboard provides the ability to customize the sensor’s reporting capability and send alerts via e-mail or text to one or many users.

Sentry I sensors are powered by a single, replaceable, AA battery. For many of the sensors there’s also a solar powered option. A small solar panel, combined with a rechargeable battery will provide a power source for years to come. If there’s no light present at the solar cell, the battery alone could continue to power the sensor for up to 5 years.

Trane Units Feature Single Zone Variable Air Volume Option
Packaged light and large commercial rooftop and split system units from Trane now offer a single zone variable air volume (SZVAV) option for increased part-load efficiency and more precise temperature control for greater comfort. The SZVAV allows the systems to modulate the indoor fan and stage compressors as space temperature changes.

This new control option exceeds California Title 24 and ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010 for reduced energy consumption when compared to traditional constant volume packaged rooftop units.

Although SZVAV mandates focus on the energy savings available in cooling-mode, these Trane solutions also offer additional potential savings. According to company sources, additional savings can be gained through unique customizable SZVAV control in modulating heating mode, soon to be on all models.

Trane now offers this standard, selectable option with the following products:

  • IntelliPak I (20-120 tons) and IntelliPak II (90-162 tons)
  • Voyager commercial (27½-50 tons)
  • Voyager light commercial (12½-25 tons)
  • Precedent (3-10 tons)
  • Odyssey split systems (6-25 tons)

Reznor MAPS III Series Provides IAQ for Mini-City
A new concept in community planning is the “Mini-City.” These can be found in urban settings, and usually consist of a single building which houses residences, retail shops, restaurants, and even movie theatres.

One thing that they all have in common is a need for outside ventilation air. To meet this need the engineers and contractors of one particular mini-city turned to Reznor modular air processing systems (MAPSIII). A total of four MAPSIII units were installed to provide fresh air to 300 condominiums.

MAPSIII units can cool, heat, dehumidify, and filter outside air for a wide range of applications.

Reliable Controls Introduces End-Of-Line Terminator
Reliable Controls announces a new product called the “End Of Line Terminator”. Many third-party BACnet integrations require a connection to Reliable Controls MS/TP devices, and it has become increasingly evident that many of these third-party devices do not come with built-in end-of-line terminators. As a result, these third-party devices sometimes function as the physical end; but have no means to terminate.

Reliable Controls has created a solution to this growing problem. The Reliable Controls End- Of-Line (EOL) Terminator provides the ability to properly terminate EIA-485 twisted pair networks. The EOL has 24VAC input power and is a biased terminator similar to those found on all of Reliable Controls controllers. The device has a red power LED to indicate the device is powered correctly and comes with convenient mounting screws and removable 5mm rising cage terminal blocks.
