Ahold and Delhaize, two European-based supermarket chains with a significant store presence in the United States, announced today that the two companies will merge, to be finalized in mid-2016. The combined entity will be known as Ahold Delhaize.
The merger will create a worldwide base of more than 6,500 stores and 375,000 employees. Ahold operates 768 stores in the U.S., staffed by 115,000 employees. Its family of stores includes Giant Food, Stop & Shop, Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets, and Peapod, the nation’s leading online grocery shopping and delivery service. Ahold's U.S. operations are based in Carlisle, PA and Quincy, MA.
Delhaize operates 1,108 Food Lion stores in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic, and 187 Hannaford stores in the Northeastern U.S. Combined employees are approximately 96,676.
