New Seasons Market, Mercer Island, Wash., has received EPA Platinum Certification for its 37,000 sq foot new store. New Seasons has 20 locations in Washington, Oregon and California and partners with farmers, ranchers and producers to deliver the best of the region and pairs local, organic favorites with grocery classics to offer customers choice, value and flexibility.
A major reason for the certification is the Hussmann Purity transcritical carbon dioxide system.
This is the first EPA GreenChill Platinum Certification for New Seasons Market, and it recognizes their efforts in reducing refrigerant emissions by at least 95% which is comparable to removing the emissions of 103 passenger vehicles from the road. “New Seasons’ commitment to achieve GreenChill’s certification standards for its new store proves that the company is serious about its role in protecting the ozone layer and preventing climate change,” said Tom Land, manager of EPA’s GreenChill Partnership. “It is important that companies understand that helping the environment has become the business model of the future.”
“We are very proud and honored to receive this award from EPA’s GreenChill Partnership,” stated Beau Butler, Director of Construction and Facilities, New Seasons Market, “We have been wanting to do a “greener” refrigeration system project, and the Mercer Island store provided us the opportunity to do so by installing a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system which removes HFCs from our store and reduces our businesses carbon footprint. This is our first transcritical CO2 project, but hopefully not our last.”
Hussmann’s Purity system operates efficiently in low, medium and high temperature applications and can be used in combination with all three. The Purity system is optimized for an operating range of 15
to 225 tons and is highly adaptable for use in most climatic conditions. Purity is a complete natural refrigerant solution with minimal greenhouse gas emissions and superior energy efficiency.
“We worked very closely with New Seasons and their engineering firm CTA to make sure that Hussmann Purity was meeting all their refrigeration and sustainability needs,” commented Michael Nobile, Sales Manager, Hussmann, “All parties worked well together to ensure a successful project. The store opened on November 10, 2016 and we are very excited about the next opportunity with New Seasons Market.”
