A2L Refrigerant Equipment Safety and Servicing Considerations

Oct. 30, 2023
A2L refrigerants are poised for adoption across a wide range of self-contained and remote systems. Offering lower-global warming potential (GWP) ratings below 300, A2Ls are among the few refrigerants capable of complying with emerging regulations.

The flammability characteristics of A2L refrigerants are important to understand when evaluating equipment design and servicing considerations. A2Ls are composed of a variety of chemical components, including those with high hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) content; pure HFOs; pure hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs); and various blends of the two. As a result, flammability ratings will differ among each individual refrigerant. With a lower flammability classification than R-290, mildly flammable A2Ls have less intense flammable characteristics and are less likely to ignite.
